Shannon Building
Text
At the turn of the 20th century, C.M. Shannon of Mt. Jackson built this structure. On the first floor was his growing hardware business. On the second was his family’s living quarters.
During this period, the downtown communities in each of Shenandoah County’s towns were growing dramatically. Many of them are filled with buildings very similar to this one. Most have commercial space on the first floor and living quarters on the second. These still house many local businesses.
Later the hardware business was purchased by Glenn Spitzer and renamed Spitzer’s Hardware. It closed in the early 1970s as local hardware stores began to be replaced by chains. Later Miller’s Boutique, a ladies clothing store, opened here. Today it is a print shop.
