Mt. Jackson Council of Temperance

Along with most other county towns, Mt. Jackson had an active Council of Temperance during the late 19th and early 20th century. The group promoted restrictions on the sale of alcohol, in some cases including a complete ban.

One of the earliest known mentions of this group was on January 12 1871 when the Shenandoah Valley Newspaper reported it had met on January 12, 1871 where a series of speakers, including a Mr. Stringer, E.S. Calbert, T.W. Reyan, and others gave lectures on the dangers of alcohol. At the same time several news members also joined.
